The Pierce Street flats were built c.1885 from coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), trees estimated from 600 to 1,200 years of age. The abundance of redwood -a notoriously strong and resilient construction material- led to the famous over-embellishing of Victorian-era millwork.
Any house of 135 years will have history written by many different people; it’s been said that Victorian’s have docents, not owners. During my tenure of 32 years i have restored original detail, removing and replacing interior wood with moldings fabricated in local mills to match original designs. I think of the flat as having the best of both worlds - history that is fully functional.
