This property provided a peaceful sanctuary for our family after the loss of our home of 30 years in the Santa Cruz Mountains wildfires of 2020. We lived in the carriage house for two years.
The property is historic, dating from early Santa Clara County and older ranchero days. The setting among oaks and redwoods is beautiful, and the old tea garden area is a meditative place to sit and enjoy some quiet moments. With the combination of tall palms, stucco walls and tile roofs, huge swimming pool and tennis court, one of our visiting friends described it as "Old Hollywood."
The house has two levels connected by a spiral staircase linking the upstairs great room to the downstairs kitchen area. When we moved in, we appreciated having basic furnishings provided as we had lost everything in the wildfire. Having a bathroom for each of the three bedrooms was a plus. The upstairs main living area is spacious, and provided us with room for our family's everyday activities as well as flexible entertaining space. We held a 50th birthday party there with plenty of room for guests to mingle and dance. We also enjoyed the extensive decks on both levels of the house, with BBQ grill, tables, chairs, and umbrellas. There was plenty of kitchen cabinet space. Appliances worked well; the refrigerator was large and held plenty of food. Heating and air conditioning were effective. Stacked washer/dryer in one of the downstairs bedroom closets was a bit cramped, but functioned fine. The garages were huge and provided more than enough parking/storage.
Being able to deal directly with the owners, rather than a property management company, was optimal for us. The owners, who live in the main house on the property, quickly responded when there was a repair needed, or problem to be addressed. They made every effort to meet our needs and take care of repairs in a timely way. We left because we purchased a home and are moving on to our next chapter.
The 1st time I read the description of the Carriage House property and its review (from 2016), it sounded too good to be true. But several weeks later, we were living the dream! My family and I ended up calling this place home for ~1 1/2 years. Where do I start? The property is absolutely gorgeous. The drive into the estate is private and gated. The main structure has a plaque stating it is the oldest adobe house in the SC Valley, built before CA became a state. The grounds (which are best described as vintage-resort) cover about 2 acres with a tennis court, basketball hoop, huge swimming pool, and San Tomas Aquino Creek. There are fruit trees, gorgeous palms, massive redwoods and oak trees, stone bridges, hummingbirds, and deer. A room off of the 7-car garage had a ping pong table we used frequently. And speaking of the garage, we own two full-sized vehicles and lots of bikes, tools, camping gear, etc... I never dreamed we'd find a rental where we could safely store all of that! As for the carriage house itself, we loved it! One thing I will point out, since it may not work for everyone, is that the house is actually on two separate levels. The upstairs, which is ground level in front, has two bdrms (each w/ a private bath) and a large living area w/ a beautiful view into the redwoods out back, comfortable furniture, a grand piano and a 72" TV. The downstairs, which is not connected by an indoor staircase, has a fully-equipped kitchen, dining/sitting area, w/d, & 3rd bd/ba. This level has windows on 3 sides looking into the very cool remnants of a ~1920 Japanese garden on one side, overlooking the creek on another, and opening onto a deck w/ grill & outdoor dining furniture on the 3rd. I cannot tell you how much we loved living here. My kids thought they had died and gone to heaven! The location was perfect: right where Saratoga, Los Gatos & Campbell meet. Oh, and we loved our landlady. She was extremely responsive, caring and kind. Highly recommended!!
My experience at 14610 Quito Road, Saratoga was for one year. When I moved in December 2014 I remember seeing the water in the creek. I use to love opening the window just to hear the sound of the water. It was so relaxing and enjoyable. Waking up on several occasions and looking outside of the Carriage House bedroom window to see a deer with her two fawns was absolutely amazing.
During the day on several occasions I walked around this gorgeous 2 acre property just to admire the trees and the flowers and then stopping at the Koi Pond to contemplate its beauty. During the night when I came home I would step out of my car to see so many shining stars. This Carriage House is in a secluded area where it is far enough away from the neighbors that it is so quite that you can hardly ever hear any noise. Coming home feels like being on a permanent vacation and stepping into a little peace of heaven. In the backyard the setting is like being in the forest. Hearing the birds sing is so enjoyable. I had the opportunity to use the pool and the tennis court and enjoy it with some of my
family members. The Carriage House inside is spacious much bigger than most with a washer and dryer in the bedroom closet. It is decorated beautifully and very cozy and welcoming. The kitchen
has all the necessary appliances. I am grateful to have been able to stay here for one year.
Unfortunately I had to leave but I will always remember that my stay here was like staying at a resort type of experience which was very peaceful & relaxing. Whoever chooses to stay here will be very pleased.
Reviews
Our family lived in the Carriage House 14610 Quito Road, Saratoga for a year from May 2023 . While our house in the Santa Cruz Mountains was having significant repair and renovations from storm damage, we were able to happily live here. Being used to a tranquil environment full of wildlife, the Carriage House provided us a very similar surroundings while being in a very central location. The creek and the trees plus garden area behind the house are nicely secluded and shady. The location is very convenient for nearby Los Gatos and Saratoga with some great recreational parks for walking plus the downtown areas. It was an easy location for getting to Silicon Valley areas plus heading back up the mountains / coast on highway 17 or 9. The property itself worked well for the three of us with all bedrooms having their own bathrooms , one of which we were able to use for guests when visiting. There was also plenty of space to work from home as required. The property was nicely semi-furnished which worked perfectly for us to only move a few items we needed. The main open plan living space was spacious with a large screen TV and really nice large windows to bring the feel of outside trees and greenery into the room. A circular stair takes you down to an open and functional kitchen area on the lower floor. This was updated with all new and good quality appliances plus cabinets installed just before our move in, which was really great. The A/C through the house was good and worked well through the warmer months. The very large swimming pool was a real bonus and the favorite part of staying here for my daughter. The garage space was clean and large with space for 4 cars plus storage if required. The main house on the property is very separate and we felt nicely secluded in the Carriage House with the property focus backing on to the creek and the beautiful trees. This place was ideal for while being out of our mountain home.
